After a few quiet summer months, my HO scale B&O Wheeling Freight Terminal sprung back into action for an operating session on late August. Charles and Val came by to move the freight.
In the days leading up to the session, I cleaned the track and changed out a few freight cars. Then I created switch lists for crews to determine their work. Here’s a blog post documenting how I set up the layout for operating. All was ready in short order for the session.
Val and I worked as the team yard crew. Not long into the session, the Proto2000 USRA 0-8-0 we were using gave us problems. I have a few extra locos so I pressed a Bachmann Spectrum 4-4-0 into service and crossed my fingers. It ran like a champ and surprised both of us with how it handled ten to twelve cars.
Charles worked as the freight house crew with another Proto2000 USRA 0-8-0. It ran smoothly for him as he switched inbound cars in order to spot at the various freight house tracks.
Everyone survived the session and we enjoyed hoagies from a local deli for lunch. Charles and Val have operated on the Wheeling Freight Terminal a few times now. Something about the railroad must be interesting because they keep coming back.
It’s exciting to watch my layout come alive during an operating session. I enjoy watching how people work through issues and figure things out. I’m already planning for the September date.
